Trying to find your footing in Hollywood can be difficult. Just when you think you have it figured out, you find yourself back at square one. Likewise, when you are ready to throw in the towel, opportunity comes knocking.
“I’ve always been told, ‘This is going to be big,’ or, ‘This is it! This is the one,’ but it never was,” says Krysten Ritter from the set of her new ABC comedy Don’t Trust the B—- in Apartment 23. “I never look at the future or try to predict the outcome of things. I just want to find the best scripts and people to work with, and what happens, happens.” It’s been an interesting road to get to this moment for the farm girl-turned-model-turned-actress, who celebrates her 30th birthday this month and who—for the first time in her career—finds herself playing the lead on a network TV show.
The raven-haired beauty plays Chloe, a hard-partying, manipulative “trickster,” as Ritter describes her, and the Pennsylvania native is clearly having fun bringing her to life. “I’m not playing myself, or ‘the Best Friend,’ or ‘the Girlfriend,’” says Ritter. “[Chloe] has such a point of view and loves to be the center of attention. I’m having a blast. I can’t believe the stuff I get to say. The writing is so tight—it’s easily the best-directed and best-written show I’ve ever been a part of.”
A Big Breaking Bad Break
Over the years, Ritter has appeared on shows including Gossip Girl, Gilmore Girls, and Veronica Mars, and despite not personally being a fan of romantic comedies (“I’m more of a cool indie, R-rated comedy, or Saw type of girl,” she says), she’s found herself in quite a few—from 27 Dresses to Confessions of a Shopaholic. However, it was her turn as the beguiling Jane Margolis on AMC’s gripping Breaking Bad that “changed everything,” says Ritter. “I never thought going into it that the role would catch on the way it did and people would love it as much as they did. I’ve been offered projects and gotten to do pilot season for the first time, all from Breaking Bad.”
She’s come a long way since her first turn living in LA, when she thought the city would be “romantic” and “filled with cool writers,” but quickly found herself lonely and a little depressed. Ritter moved back home to Pennsylvania, began modeling and traveling the world, and eventually gave LA a second chance. Yet this time around, despite her continued success, she still hasn’t quite gotten used to the spotlight. “There are people following me around [on set] basically babysitting me; my character is wearing these over-the-top clothes—it’s crazy,” says Ritter. “Every day I think to myself, I’m a farm girl; this is insane.”

Krysten Ritter is the ultimate “cool girl.” Laid-back and undeniably hilarious, we’ve fallen in love with this 29-year-old quadruple threat (actress/model/screenwriter/producer). So, it’s a good thing that she’s currently filming a new series, Don’t Trust The B—- in Apartment 23, because we’re having some serious Krysten withdrawals since her role as Jane on Breaking Bad ended.
From adoring classic brands such as Dior and Dolce & Gabbana to fully embracing ‘80s silhouettes, complete with teased hair and shoulder pads, Ritter has her sartorial bases covered. An ex-model, she’s maintained a name for herself in the fashion world with a grungy-meets-girly style and appearing as the self-proclaimed “weird and funny” face in Banana Republic’s 2009 ad campaign.
Clearly, weird and funny works for Krysten, who looks stunning. Even next to what she describes as “tall, gorgeous freaks” (aka models).
From an obsession with Clueless to being given the dress off of Kate Bosworth’s back (literally), Ritter shares some of her favorite fashion moments with Lucky.
Were you into fashion growing up?
You know, I’ve had a very specific style ever since I was 14 or 15 years old. I was really into Guns n’ Roses and Aerosmith and Nirvana so I wore jeans and boots. And then when I was a little bit older, like a mid-teenager, I started going a little girlier because I saw Clueless. So basically I merged my grunge look with a little bit of sky-high action, like little skirts. And I’m still the same way. I still keep buying the same staple pieces. All I need is a good pair of jeans, some black leggings, some boots, a good jacket and a staple, uniform dress and I mix and match it. My style has always been grungy girly…and poor.
Still, you are known for your great style. There’s a reason Banana Republic picked you to be in their ads.
That was so cool! When I was a model I was always a little offbeat, a little quirkier, and I always felt like “Oh my god. These women around me are tall, gorgeous freaks of…like aliens from outer space” And then there I was messing around. So when I showed up at the Banana Republic campaign shoot it was me and some other actresses like Lauren Ambrose, some cool people, and then they had a couple of models and they were gorgeous. And I was like ‘Oh no. Here we go again!’ But they ended up liking whatever it is that I do and they made me the sort of center of the campaign and brought me back the next year. I was like ‘Wow, this is so cool! The fact that I’m making funny faces and jumping around and being a goofball is working.’
Do you have a dream brand that you’d like to align yourself with for another campaign?
My god, yes! I could go on and on. I would love to do Dolce & Gabbana, Dior, Miu Miu. I mean, that would be heaven. And I would love to do a makeup campaign. Dolce & Gabbana, I swear to God, their fit model must be my size: big butt, little waist, no boobs. Across the board, I can just walk into those dresses and they fit perfectly. Dolce & Gabbana just gets me every time.
In Killing Bono you got to be very ’80s. Is that an era you love or hate?
I love it! You don’t have to twist my arm at all to give me some big hair and a little pencil skirt with a high waist. It suits me! I just love the ’80s. In Killing Bono I think the hair was a little too big because it was really authentic and that’s just wrong. Nobody should ever use that much hairspray. But I love the clothes and I thought that the costume designer just killed it! I thought what I was wearing was pretty spot-on. I love the shoulder pads! They make your figure look so nice because they make your waist look small. There’s something to it.
You’ve written and produced the upcoming movie, Life Happens, in which you co-star with Rachel Bilson and Kate Bosworth. Did you guys get to trade fashion tips at all on set?
It’s funny you ask, because there was a day where Kate Bosworth showed up and she was wearing this adorable dress, I was just like ‘Aw! I love what you’re wearing, where’d you get it?” And she was like, ‘I got it at Topshop!’ We all love Topshop, like we could live in there. And she gave me the dress off of her back. I’m not kidding. She was like ‘Here, you can have it.’ I wear it all the time, I don’t even think I’ve washed it—it still smells like Kate.
What designers are you into right now?
I’m really digging the Material Girl line that Madonna’s daughter did. And MINKPINK has a lot of cute little dresses that are affordable but special as well. I just wore a Christian Siriano skirt in a magazine spread. I don’t watch Project Runway, so I didn’t know anything about him or who he was, but he seems like he’s doing something exciting as well.
Any great holiday gift tips you can share?
I just got this amazing contraption called a SodaStream. I’m obsessed with bubbly water, but I realized that my recycling can was overflowing with bottles and I hate that. So I got this thing, it’s shaped like a penguin and it makes bubbly water, and now my recycling is literally half as full. It’s amazing. I’m getting that for everyone.

On Friday, ABC announced the midseason premiere dates for its new and returning shows, but there were some notable holes.
While rookie comedy Work It snagged the post-Last Man Standing slot — taking over for Man Up! — on Tuesdays beginning in January, Bill Lawrence and Kevin Biegel’s half-hour series Cougar Town still remains off the network’s schedule. When the network unveiled its fall shedule in May, the Courteney Cox-toplined show was being eyed for a midseason run.
Since Cougar Town launched in 2009, the show has seen scheduling jumps. Last season, ABC slotted its spring return after more than two months off the air on a Monday night before continuing in its usual home two days later. Centered on Jules, her group of friends and her college-bound son, Cougar Town has not been the breakout ratings success that ABC has had with Modern Family, which launched the same year.
But Cougar Town isn’t the only ABC offering still awaiting a premiere. Don’t Trust the B—- in Apt. 23, starring Krysten Ritter, Dreama Walker and James Van Der Beek as a heightened version of himself, is still off the net’s schedule. Don’t Trust the B—- follows the lives of two different women, a barista who lost a high-profile upscale job (Walker) and a savvy street smart con artist (Ritter), who end up rooming together in a New York City apartment.
Shonda Rhimes’ Kerry Washington-led political drama Scandal is also missing from the net’s lineup. The hourlong revolves around Olivia Pope (Washington), a former media consultant to the president (Tony Goldwyn) who opens up her own firm, hoping to start a new career and personal life. If and when ABC slots Scandal, this would mark Rhimes’ third drama on the network’s schedule, joining veteran medical procedurals Grey’s Anatomy and Private Practice.

The ‘Bitch’ is back.
After ABC changed a new show’s mildly profane title during development, upcoming comedy Apartment 23 has now more-or-less reverted to its original head-turning name.
The official new title of the show is Don’t Trust The B—- in Apartment 23, dashing out the letters of the curse in an attempt to soften its impact (not entirely unlike how CBS solved buying short-lived Shit My Dad Says last season, substituting the non-word “$#*!”). The Disney-owned network has two upcoming shows that previously used the word “bitch” in their title — Don’t Trust the Bitch in Apartment 23 and drama Good Christian Bitches. The former was shorted to Apartment 23 right before the network’s broadcast upfront presentation in May. The latter was change to Good Christian Belles, and was then changed again to GCB. (Good Christian Bitches, in particular, was singled out by some culture critics who were ready to pounce on the show should it hit the air with its original title).
In the case of Apartment 23, the new title was rather anonymous; it didn’t tell you anything about the show. The new version more clearly suggests the show’s premise — about a naive midwesterner (Dreama Walker) who moves in with a hardcore party girl (Krysten Ritter). And given that CBS’ 2 Broke Girls and Fox’s New Girl have successfully launched girl-with-new-roommate(s)-in-the-big-city premises this fall, the cleverly written Apartment 23 might likewise pop for viewers. The show does not yet have a premiere date, but is expected to debut sometime this season.
Although networks are wary about the swear word in a show’s title, on-air use is fair game. According to a story in the New York Times a couple years ago, the use of the word “bitch” in primetime tripled in the last decade, growing to 1,277 uses on 685 shows in 2007 from 431 uses on 103 prime-time episodes in 1998.
